Writing down thoughts helps staying organised on a day to day basis. However, there is more to journaling than just keeping track of chores and obligations. It is a very powerful self-care tool, can bring inner peace and clarity. It also is a brilliant way to get creative. Other than a pen and paper you first of all need a starting point. Some people find it useful to journal with a certain topic in mind. Here are some ideas and methods that might help you to get into it.
Practice Gratitude
Fast paced days can lead to forgetting what is really important to us. Taking five to ten minutes in the evening to write down moments we feel grateful for can help getting back in touch with what matters most to us and finding beauty in everyday situations. Prompting questions could be: What are you thankful for? What is the best thing that happened this week?
Track Goals. And Achievements.
Listing goals is a great way to visualise your career. However, by doing so we sometimes focus too much on the future. Put together a list of what you have achieved so far. This will spark inner strength and confidence. Exactly what you need for your next project. Prompting questions could be: Describe how you have changed in the last year? Something you are proud of? Where were you ten years ago?
Inspiration – from Outside and Within
Writing about someone who inspires you can truly be an eye-opener. Find reasons why this person inspires you and in which situation you feel most inspired by that someone. Is there something in that person’s character that you would like to learn and integrate into your own life? The same idea but from another angle: post about books, music or movies that inspired you. This may help you to discover new landmarks of your personality.
Take Care
Journaling is just the tip of the iceberg. Make a list with things that you love doing, that nurture your soul. What can you do to take care of yourself? Have a nice dinner on your own, meet a good friend, go to the sauna. There are endless choices. The most important question is: What’s best for you?
